My son is having an Irish themed 5th birthday party. Obviously I am not going to make cabbage or anything like that, for that many people. We are serving hot dogs and barbecue but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on other Irish things I could incorporate into the menu?

Jelly- carageenan is a type of seaweed native to Ireland which is used to make jelly (and no, it doesn't taste like seaweed). Just use ordinary jelly and tell people this.

Fried potatoes? Sausages might be a better idea than hot dogs- they're not that common over here.

Fruit, nuts and honey are good with everything. Have some kind of a fruit salad incorporating fruits which grow in Ireland- apples, blackberries etc.

Apple pie! Except we call it tart here.

Irish cuisine isnt actually well known for deserts or snacks, it is famous for good healthy hearty meals like bacon and cabbage.

the only real common irish thing that comes close to a desert is 'báirín breac', its sorta like pudding. there is always a penny and a ring put into the mixture when it is being made so that when people are eating it, the person who finds the penny has the luck of wealth, and the one who finds the ring will have the luck of marriage. Its just a tradition

Another thing you could do is Boxty, its a traditional irish sort of pancake made out of potatoes though it isnt really sweet like a desert

This is yummy!

INGREDIENTS

1 (16 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 (3.4 ounce) package instant pistachio pudding mix

6 drops green food coloring (optional)

3 cups miniature marshmallows

1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained

1/2 cup chopped pistachios or walnuts

(personally I prefer the walnuts)

DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, combine whipped topping, pudding mix and food coloring if desired. Fold in the marshmallows and pineapple. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Just before serving, sprinkle with nuts

We don't eat corned beef and cabbage in Ireland, that's an Irish American tradition.

You could get Irish chocolates.

Cheese is fairly popular.

Bread and butter pudding.

Cocktail sausages.

For a side dish you could have champ - basically mashed potatoes and milk and leeks all mixed together its yummy!

For dessert, how about trifle, or bailey's cheesecake??
